Dean led us onto an unnamed table, and once again we looked down upon the badlands. The Arikara was the first tribe known to have inhabited the White River area. The Sage Creek Rim Road departs the Badlands Loop Road to the west, just south of the Pinnacles Entrance. An array of extinct animals, from enormous to very small, once ranged the area now in Badlands National Park. It has the face of a sheep, four legs which each end in two toes, and a long, dog-like tail. We ordered the tacos and were not disappointed. Though the bison-hunting Lakota flourished during the next 100 years, their dominion on the prairie was short-lived. The North Unit's badlands, while not quite as dramatic as those in the lower units, are still dazzling. The earliest people here were mammoth hunters. The South Unit of Badlands National Park is an oddity, having been born of an administrative decision that incorporated a large tract of Indian-owned land into a national park in a rather heavy-handed manner. Many are professional or amateur paleontologists who come to study fossil remains of Badlands' ancient life. The view was magical. The prairie is greenish-yellow, colored this way from a mixture of grasses and yellow sweet clover. Others come to camp, photograph wildlife, or search for birds or flowers. In 1890 as many as a thousand Sioux participated in a religious ritual called the Ghost Dance, a marathon ceremony during which the dancers believed that they became invincible, impervious even to bullets. While the entire park is available to you, there are some popular routes for backcountry camping. North Unit -- This is the best known and most easily explored area. This road is one of the most scenic drives youll find and you wont regret topping the tank off for this one. Most visitors to Badlands simply view the park from their cozy metal coffins on the 36-mile Badlands Loop Road. Various sites are listed in the Western part of the map representing the Black Hills, including Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The best of these savagely beautiful badlands comprise the Badlands National Park, a unique region so ruthlessly ravaged by wind and water that has become a scenic wonderland. The hike travels along the base of badlands formations, with buttes to the north and prairie to the south. Backcountry camping in the Badlands allows the traveler to be faced with peace, serenity and a firsthand look at the dynamics of nature. SD Badlands offers few options for on-trail distance hiking, with the 5-mile one way Castle Trail being the longest developed trail in the park. In an effort to educate the public about the ongoing scientific research surrounding these ancient life forms, the park provides public access to the Badlands Fossil Preparation Lab. The entrance fee is $10 a car. Cedar Pass Campground ($10 a night), near the lodge, has water and flush toilets, but no showers.
